Put away your road bike, get down the mountain bike and join the Santa Fe Trail Bike Ride for the beautiful prairie in the Flint Hills around Alta Vista, Kansas. This is an opportunity to enjoy the wonderfully scenic area known only to locals and the more adventurous cyclists. Riders can slam through the hills and rocks with eyes on the road only, or keep your head up and enjoy the wonderful views, old stone fences, and old historical buildings surrounded by lots of trees with the foliage just beginning to change. The "Little Egypt" area is an old Indian camping ground with old bridges, bluffs, caves, and some of the toughest hills anywhere. A fun off-road section near the end of the ride is a labyrinth called "Margaret's Maze".
You have a choice of an all-paved route of about 40 miles, or two dirt/gravel routes of 20 or 58 miles, or a mixed pavement/gravel ride of about 30 miles. Early registration is $25, or $30 on the day of the ride. The registration fee includes hot coffee, hot chocolate and warm fellowship to greet you in the park before the ride, and an all-you-can-eat lunch in the park when you return.People from the Parish will share the meal and information about the area.
Proceeds from the ride are used to fund youth and adult mission trips/camps and scholarships for the Santa Fe Trail Parish and the UMC.
There is also a Santa Fe Trail Spring Bike Ride in April.
