Bicyclist Killed Near Hoxie

Bicyclist Aaron Lee McKinney was killed by a driver near Hoxie on July 16th, struck from behind by a car on K-23 in Sheridan County.

The Hays Post reports:

A Kansas man was killed when a car hit his bicycle just after 11 a.m. on Wednesday in Sheridan County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a bicycle driven by Aaron Lee McKinney, 33, Hoxie was southbound on Kansas 23 eight miles south of Hoxie on the right side of the road.

A 2003 Pontiac driven by Kimberly Denise Lankas, 38, Atwood, was also southbound and struck the bicycle.

McKinney was thrown off the bike and landed in the west ditch. McKinney was pronounced dead at the scene.

No word yet on any charges against the driver for killing Mr. McKinney…

Aaron Lee McKinney is the fifth person to die while bicycling in Kansas in 2014. Kristina Brown was killed by a drunk driver on January 10th in Wichita, Kenneth Young collapsed and died from a medical condition near Admire on June 22, Craig McBroom died after colliding with a train in Wichita on June 23, and Mark Jilka was struck and killed near Manhattan on June 26.

    Aaron Lee McKinneyAaron Lee McKinney passed away on July 16, 2014 near Hoxie, Kansas at the age of 33. He was born to Leroy Dean and Mary Louise (Creighton) McKinney on March 21, 1981 in Garden City, Kansas. Aaron was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the Boy Scouts of America, the Kansas Academy of Physician Assistants, and the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Throughout his career he worked as an emergency medical technician and fireman in Junction City and Wichita, a clinic and emergency room physician assistant in Atwood and St. Francis, and an emergency room physician assistant in Sedan and Hoxie. From hunting, soccer, running marathons to training for the Ironman Triathlon and running Pikes Peak, Aaron enjoyed outdoor activities and maintaining good physical condition. Aaron was of sound mind and body, and had a heart and spirit to match.
