From the Topeka Capital-Journal:
An 11-year-old girl was hospitalized with what police said were minor injuries after the bicycle she was riding collided with a car Sunday night in south Topeka.
The accident was reported about 5:30 p.m. at S.W. 32nd and Lincoln.Police Sgt. Kelly Roberts said at the scene that the girl and a friend had been on a bicycle that was traveling against traffic as it proceeded south on S.W. Lincoln.
A car headed west on S.W. 32nd was turning north onto S.W. Lincoln, and collided with the bicycle.
Roberts said the bicycle didn’t have a headlight or taillight. The girl who was injured wasn’t wearing a helmet, he said.
The injured girl, who suffered a scrape to her left leg, was taken by American Medical Response ambulance to St. Francis Health Center, authorities said.
No injuries were reported to the other rider on the bicycle.
No word on whether or not the driver will face charges or tickets.
We need to remind our kids (and ourselves) to ride with the flow of traffic, to use lights in dim or dark conditions (in this case, the accident occurred about a half hour after sunset), and to wear a helmet. It sounds like the victim in this collision was fortunate to escape with minor injuries. I could have been a lot worse, particularly without the helmet.
And drivers, it’s your job to be watchful, particularly on neighborhood streets.
Be careful out there!
