From the Sioux City Journal, South Sioux trails to get funds for snow removal:
The Siouxland Trails Foundation will present a $4,782 check to the city of South Sioux City Monday to purchase equipment for removing snow from its extensive recreation trail.
The grant money was primarily raised by the foundation and sponsors of the annual Tri-State Trails Tour Bicycle Ride held each May.
In announcing the grant, foundation President Bob DeSmidt noted that South Sioux city has made a major commitment to recreational trails and has several additions to the system on the construction schedule. He called the city’s trail system “the most connected” in the local metro area” and said they are the most accessible to the city’s residents. “South Sioux City has done an excellent job of maintaining its trails and the equipment that will be purchased with this grant will facilitate winter cleaning.”
South Sioux City is the only Bicycle Friendly Community in the state of Nebraska, and it’s encouraging to see that they take their winter trail maintenance seriously.
Many trails languish in the winter months, getting cleared last (if at all), while streets and roads get first dibs on ice and snow removal.
As use of trails for basic transportation increases, this is something that needs to be improved. Trails are public transportation infrastructure, just like roads, and need the same level of commitment to safe passage.
